Abingdon’s Michaelmas fair grew out of the hiring fairs held after the Black Death, when workers stood to be hired carrying a tool of their trade, or a mop. It is billed as the longest street fair in Europe and takes over the town on the Monday and Tuesday before 11 October.

The fair runs the whole length of Ock Street and fills the Market Place, High Street and The Square; the Market Place by the County Hall is the heart of it. It opens at noon on the Monday.
