Ballinasloe’s October fair dates from the 18th century and in the early 1800s was reckoned the largest horse fair in Europe. Horses are still bought and sold by private bargain on the Fair Green, with no auctioneer, during a week that starts on the Sunday before the first Tuesday of October.

Horses are traded on the Fair Green on Society Street, busiest on the first Sunday and Monday, when the Pony and Horse of the Fair are judged from about 12:30 on the Sunday. A street festival fills the town over the final weekend.
