Bridgwater’s fair has been held on St Matthew’s Field since at least 1404, under a charter the town dates to 1249. Once a great hiring fair and sheep and horse market, it now runs for four days from the last Wednesday of September and still begins with a horse fair.

St Matthew’s Field
The fair fills St Matthew's Field off West Street, with the funfair, the West Street market and, on the Wednesday, the traditional horse fair. The Mayor opens it at 11:00 on the Wednesday; on the Thursday and Friday it opens at 13:00.
