Egremont’s fair is traditionally dated to a charter of 1267 and has been held nearly every year since. The day brings the parade of the apple cart, a greasy pole, Cumberland wrestling and the World Gurning Championship, where people pull faces through a horse collar.

Main Street is closed to traffic for the day. Crab apples are thrown to the crowd from a lorry on Main Street around midday, sports and shows are held on the field, and the World Gurning Championship is in the evening.
