Rushbearing recalls the days when the earth floor of St Oswald’s Church was strewn with fresh rushes. Rush maidens carry rushes on a linen sheet and villagers carry bearings of rushes and flowers through Grasmere, and after the service children are given Grasmere gingerbread.

The procession gathers at Grasmere School from 14:00 and sets off at 15:00 behind a brass band, stopping for prayers at Moss Parrock and ending at St Oswald's Church for the rushbearing service.
