Knutsford has held its May Day since 1864 and was allowed to call it Royal after the Prince and Princess of Wales visited in 1887. Hundreds of children in costume parade through the town, a May Queen is crowned on the Heath, and the streets are decorated by sanding, drawing patterns and mottoes in coloured sand.
