King John’s charter of 1215 required each new Mayor of London to travel to Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown, and the journey has been made for more than 800 years. Today the new Lord Mayor rides in the gilded State Coach at the heart of a long procession of bands, floats, livery companies and military units.

Mansion House
The procession sets off from Mansion House at 11:00 and travels through the City to the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand, returning in the afternoon. Any point on the route will do; it is quieter away from Mansion House and St Paul's.
