Mallwyd is one of the places in the Dyfi and Mawddwy country where the plygain never died out, and its service falls on 13 January, Hen Galan, the Old New Year. Parties of local singers stand in turn to sing old Welsh carols unaccompanied, with no announcements between them. The church itself was largely rebuilt in the seventeenth century by the scholar Dr John Davies, rector of Mallwyd.
