Mountain Ash’s New Year’s Eve races honour Guto Nyth Bran, an 18th century runner from the parish whose speed is the stuff of legend. After a service at Llanwynno church, a Mystery Runner, a sporting celebrity whose name is kept secret until they arrive, carries a torch about four miles from Guto’s grave into town, and then the races are run through the streets. Watching is free; runners must enter in advance.

The races start and finish in Mountain Ash town centre, by the statue of Guto Nyth Bran on Oxford Street. Entertainment starts at 15:30, the first races at 17:00, and the Mystery Runner arrives at about 18:20. A park and ride runs from the comprehensive school on New Road.
