Paisley’s weavers won a long dispute with the manufacturers over payment for the sma’ shot, a hidden binding thread in the famous Paisley shawls, and kept the day as a holiday. Today a parade led by a copy of the Charleston Drum, which once called the weavers out, ends with the burning of the Cork, an effigy of the hated middleman.
