Before sunrise on Martinmas morning the agent of the Duke of Buccleuch reads the charter at Knightlow Cross, and as each parish of the old Knightlow Hundred is called its representative drops its wroth silver into the hollow of the old cross base. The dues have been paid here for centuries, and the ceremony was cancelled in 2020 for the first time in living memory. When 11 November falls on a Sunday it is held on the Saturday before.
