King John granted Yarm its fair in 1207, and it was once famous for horses and for cheese, with hundreds of tons sold in a year. Livestock sales ended in the 1970s, but on the Saturday horses are still ridden along the High Street and an old horn is blown before the fair is blessed.

The fair fills the long cobbled High Street, which is closed to traffic. It opens in the evening on the Thursday and Friday and from 13:00 on the Saturday, after the Riding of the Fair at about 11:30 and the blessing at noon.
