Evil spirits revelling in the churches

30 April · Wales

Lore and belief

Within living memory it was believed in Wales that evil spirits were let loose on May Day Eve, St John’s Eve and All Hallows’ Eve and held high revelry inside the churches. Owen likened it to the witches’ dance in Alloway Kirk in Burns’s Tam o’ Shanter, and saw in it the memory of an old struggle between rival pagan worships.

Evil Spirits at certain times of the year, such as St John's Eve, and May Day Eve, and All Hallows' Eve, were let loose, and that on these nights they held high revelry in churches.
