At Leicester the riding of the George was one of the chief ceremonies of the town year. The townspeople were bound to turn out and attend the mayor for riding the George, or riding against the king as it was called, at the mayor’s pleasure. The harnessed horse of St George was kept standing at the end of St George’s chapel in St Martin’s church.
