The chain book of the city of Dublin laid down who was to provide what for the St George’s Day pageant. The mayor of the year before found the emperor and empress with their followers, the mayor in office found a horse for St George, and the wardens paid him three shillings and fourpence for his day’s wages. The elder master of the guild found a well-dressed maiden to lead the dragon and the clerk of the market a golden line for it, while the younger warden found the king and queen of Sylene, the city of the legend, and hung St George’s chapel in black with cushions and rushes. St George had to pay his own four trumpeters.
