Royal Oak, the Whigs to provoke

29 May · Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland

No longer kept

Brand remembered that the boys of Newcastle had a taunting rhyme for Royal Oak Day, which they shouted at anyone they met on 29 May without oak leaves in his hat. Those who did not share the loyal spirit of the day answered by wearing plane-tree leaves instead, with a rhyme of their own calling the church folk thieves. Brand thought both rhymes childish but a true sign of the party feeling the day was meant to stir.
