An old manuscript about Eton recorded that on a certain day in September, most likely Holy Rood Day, the scholars had a holiday to go out and gather nuts. When they came back they had to give some of the nuts to the masters. Before they were let out they had to write verses on the fruitfulness of autumn and the cold of the coming winter.
