The fire for the Magi’s star

5 January

No longer kept

Blount recorded that the people of Staffordshire made a fire on the eve of Twelfth Day in memory of the blazing star that led the three Magi to the manger at Bethlehem. Ellis added the note to Brand’s account of Twelfth Day, taking it from Halliwell’s Dictionary. It stands beside the twelve fires lit on the same night in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, though Blount gives the Staffordshire fire a meaning of its own.

in memory of the blazing-star that conducted the three Magi to the manger at Bethlem.
