At Standlake the minister’s Rogation Week procession stopped in the cellar of the Chequer Inn, where he read the Gospel at the head of a barrel. Brand, quoting Plot’s History of Oxfordshire, explains that some said a hermitage had stood there and others an ancient cross, and that since the inn had been built over the spot the procession had to go on reading the Gospel inside it.
