The New Moon Through Glass

A Suffolk correspondent of Chambers kept a night school for rough country lads, and one winter evening they caught sight of the new moon through the schoolroom window. Those with money in their pockets turned it for luck, half in jest, and they agreed among themselves that it was unlucky to see the new moon for the first time through glass. He could not tell where the belief came from, but thought it must be comparatively modern.
