The Trinity garland at Newnton

At Newnton in North Wiltshire a Trinity Sunday rite recalled King Athelstan’s gift of a common and a house for the hayward. The door of the hayward’s house was struck three times, prayers read, and a maid of the town brought out a garland of flowers on a hoop. She and a bachelor from another parish passed it three times between their necks with three kisses each time, and he paid her a penny or more. In the evening every commoner sent his supper to the house and they ate together, giving the leftovers to the poor.
