A swarm of bees in May

11 May · Warwickshire

Lore and belief

A Warwickshire correspondent told Hone that there the first swarm from a hive was called a swarm, the second a cast and the third a spindle. The county saying went that a swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay, a swarm in June is worth a silver spoon, and a swarm in July is not worth a fly. He added the Warwickshire rhyme that the robin and the wren are God Almighty’s cock and hen, and the martin and the swallow are God Almighty’s bow and arrow.

A swarm of bees in May Is worth a load of hay ; A swarm of bees in June Is worth a silver spune
