In the parish processions a gospel was read at the springs to bless them, a custom kept at Sunningwell in Berkshire until 1688. In Cheshire, Aubrey was told, people read a gospel at the springs when they went in perambulation and believed the water was the better for it. He also noted that before the Civil War gospels were read in the cornfields on the Rogation days.

In Processions, they used to read a Ghospell at the springs to blesse them, wch hath been dis-continued at Sunny-well in Barkshire, but since 1688.
