Beggar’s Bush Fair at Rye

Rye held a small pedlars’ fair at Beggar’s Bush on St Bartholomew’s Day, and chose its mayor on the same day. It was also the day for bull-baiting, which is said to have ended about 1808. Hazlitt noted that the baiting ring could still be seen in a field near the King’s Head in 1878.

A ring which, so late as 1878, was still to be seen in a field near the King's Head Inn, was the last memento of the practice of bull-baiting, formerly usual on this occasion.
