At Bartholomewtide, or at Stourbridge Fair near Cambridge, the farmer bought what his house needed for repairs and sold his butter and cheese. Tusser advised selling then, since whoever bought early would lose by it. The same stanzas sent him home with forty old ewes to fatten and a milch cow for Lent.

At Bartilmewtide, or at Sturbridge faire, / buie that as is needfull, thy house to repaire: / Then sell to thy profit, both butter and cheese, / who buieth it sooner, the more he shall leese.
