The great fair at Lee, in Woodkirk parish near Leeds, ended on St Bartholomew’s Day. Besides trading, it was a place where scholars held public exercises and disputations. Hazlitt took this from The Dialect of Leeds (1862), which thought the fair had been a privilege granted to Nostell Priory.

This fair was not only for purposes of buying and selling, barter and exchange, but scholastic exercises and disputations were held there.
