Britton wrote in his Cathedral Antiquities that in Monmouthshire the poorer people, Catholic and Protestant alike, went begging bread for the souls of the dead on All Saints’ Day. The bread given out was called dole bread. Another old custom still kept in the county was strewing the graves and the churchyard with flowers and evergreens on feast days and holy days. Hone gave both in The Year Book under 1 November.
