Hallow-fair at Fordyce

No longer kept

Fordyce’s yearly market was called Hallow-fair, and its charter of 1592 set it at All Hallows, to run for eight days. An older charter from Bishop Elphinstone had fixed it instead on the feast of the local saint Talarican and its octave. The minister of Fordyce set the fair beside the old Sunday market in the churchyard, which lasted into the early eighteenth century.
