Brand’s servant, a Warwickshire man, told him that in that county a seed cake was had at Allhallows, marking the end of wheat sowing. At the end of barley and bean sowing the ploughmen were given froise, a kind of thick pancake. Tusser also named the seed cake, with pasties and a frumenty pot, among the things a farmer’s wife should provide when wheat sowing was done.

there is a custom in that county to have seed cake at All-hallows, at the end of wheat seed-time.
