The Reading Mercury of 24 May 1819 advertised Peppard Revel for Whit Monday. For the young and old gamesters a good hat was to be played for at cudgels by the first seven couples, the prize going to the man who broke most heads. Every man who broke a head was to get one and sixpence, and the man whose head was broken a shilling.
