The Eynsham timber

Whit Monday · Eynsham, Oxfordshire

No longer kept

At Eynsham the townspeople might cut down on Whit Monday as much timber as they could haul by hand into the abbey yard, the churchwardens first marking the trees. Whatever they could then drag out again past the abbey servants they kept for the repair of the church. By this service they held their right of common at Lammas and Michaelmas. The custom was given up by agreement early in the 1700s.
