The people of Burford once claimed the right to hunt deer in Wychwood Forest on Whit Sunday. The corporation kept a letter of 1593 asking the townspeople to give up the hunt that year because of the plague, and promising that the keepers would deliver two bucks to the bailiffs instead. The letter added that giving it up once should not harm the privilege in future years.
