At Whitsuntide the maidens of St Laurence’s parish in Reading gathered money for the church beside a tree set up at the church door. Brand, quoting the churchwardens’ accounts in Coates’s History of Reading, gives two shillings and sixpence clear from the maidens’ gathering in 1505, threepence from Richard Waren for the tree itself, and in 1502 eightpence for making up the maidens’ banner cloth.
