The York Corpus Christi play

The Guild of Corpus Christi at York was bound to put on a Corpus Christi play every year, and it was acted in the city until 1584. At Newcastle upon Tyne the trades played their own pageants on the same feast, the barbers taking the Baptism of Christ and the slaters Abraham and Isaac. The York plays were revived in the twentieth century and are still performed, sometimes on wagons in the streets.
