The Chester Whitsun plays

Chester’s mystery plays were said to have been written by Randall Higgenett, a monk of Chester Abbey, and played on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Whitsun week. They were acted in the open air in twenty-four pageants, each taken by one of the city guilds, the tanners beginning with the Fall of Lucifer. They died out after the Reformation, but were revived in the twentieth century and are still staged in the city every few years.
