Whitsuntide was the great season for morris dancers. Chambers traced the earliest English records to the churchwardens’ accounts of Kingston upon Thames under Henry VII and Henry VIII, where the dancers played Robin Hood, Maid Marian and a friar, with a fool, a piper and taborer and bells on their legs, and the parish kept their coats. At Reading the churchwardens paid the morris dancers and minstrels at Whitsuntide in 1557 and the hobby horse on May Day. A painted window at Betley in Staffordshire showed all the characters. Morris dancing at Whitsun is still kept in many places.
