Every year on the evening before the Whitsun holidays the master, scholars and choristers of Winchester College walked in procession with a band round the college court and a pillar, chanting the Latin song Dulce Domum. The story went that some 230 years earlier a scholar kept back as a punishment was tied to that pillar while the others went home, wrote the song about the pleasures of home, and died of grief before they returned. A correspondent, Henry Brandon, sent Hone the tradition with the full Latin words in May 1826.
