No longer kept

In the days of John Aubrey’s grandfather the Whitsuntide church-ale paid for the poor of Kington St Michael, a large Wiltshire parish, and no poor rate was needed. Brand, quoting Aubrey’s Natural History of the North Division of Wiltshire, describes the church-house with its spits and crocks, where householders met, feasted and gave their charity. The young people danced, bowled and shot at the butts while the old folk sat gravely by and watched.

There were no rates for the poor in my grandfather's days ; but for Kingston St. Michael (no small parish) the Church-Ale of Whitsuntide did the business.
