On New Year’s Eve the ashes on the hearth were sifted or smoothed and left untouched overnight. If the likeness of a coffin appeared in them by morning someone would die, and if a ring appeared someone would be married. Aubrey set the charm down among other country divinations.

On New Year's-eve night, sift (or smooth) the Ashes and leave it so when you goe to Bed; next morning looke and if you find there the likenesse of a Coffin, one will dye: if of a Ring one will be married.
