Lore and belief

The last glass drained from the last bottle on New Year’s Eve or Day was called the lucky glass and brought good fortune to whoever got it. An unmarried person who drank it would be the first of the company to marry. On New Year’s Day, too, the Christian name of the first person of the opposite sex one saw would be that of one’s future husband or wife.
