On New Year’s Eve in the Hebrides one man put on a cow’s hide and ran round the laird’s house while the others beat the hide with sticks. The whole company fled outside in pretended fright and the door was shut on them, and nobody was let back in without reciting a verse. Brand took the game from Dr Johnson’s Journey to the Western Islands, where a gentleman had described it to Johnson.
