The Richmond pinder’s Hagman song

No longer kept

On New Year’s Eve old Master Craven, the pinder of the borough of Richmond, sang the last surviving verses of the Hagmena song. The singers asked for a good cut from the bacon flitch and money from the black ark, the great oak chest. Each verse ended with the cry Hagman heigh. Denham took the verses down from Craven’s recitation.

To-night it is the New Year's eve, to-morrow is the day, And we are come for our right, and for our ray, As we used to do in Old King Henry's day. Sing, fellows, sing! Hagman heigh!
