Before noon on St Thomas’s Day the tenants of the manor of Thornton put five shillings into a hole in a certain tombstone in the churchyard. The payment freed them from the lord’s tithe of hay for the year; if they missed the hour, the privilege was lost. Dyer took this from Hampson’s Medii Aevi Kalendarium.
