Mother Bunch’s Closet Newly Broke Open, printed under St Thomas’s Day, told a girl that this was the best time of year to learn who her husband would be. She was to pare a St Thomas’s onion, lay it on a clean handkerchief under her pillow, put on a clean smock and lie down with her arms spread out, saying a rhyme asking the saint to bring her love to her that night. In her first sleep she would dream of the man she was to marry, who would come and offer to kiss her.
