The Lord Mayor’s Plough Monday wassail

the first Monday on or after 7 January · London

No longer kept

On Plough Monday the Lord Mayor of London kept wassail with his household, with the Lady Mayoress at the head of their table. On Plough Sunday before it he went to church to qualify for office, attended by two yeomen of the water-side who could swear to it at the next sessions. Hone’s account of the mayor’s household said the Monday had once been a gala day, when the piles of sweetmeats were so high that the diners could scarcely see the person opposite, but by his time elegance had taken the place of plenty.

On the Monday his lordship keeps wassail with his household, and with his lady presides at the head of their table.
