In 1575 the churchwardens of Wigtoft in Lincolnshire received a pound from two men for the plough-gathering, the money collected when the ploughmen went round with their plough. Brand, quoting Nichols’s extracts from the Wigtoft accounts, gives the editor’s note that the ploughmen of the neighbourhood still paraded on Plough Monday in grotesque dress and ribbons, but spent what little they gathered on feasting themselves. He also found a gathering of the white plough at Heybridge in Essex in 1522.
