On Plough Monday at Whitby an extra band of six danced the sword dance, ending by plaiting their swords into a hexagon or rose that one of them held up above their heads. Clowns called Turns, in harlequin dress with painted or masked faces, played antics for the crowd. Men in women’s clothes called Madgies or Madgy Pegs went from door to door rattling old canisters for money, cheering where they were paid and shouting hunger and starvation where they were not.
