The fire kept in on New Year’s Eve

31 December · The Scottish Borders

Lore and belief

On the Borders it was thought very unlucky to let the house fire go out on New Year’s Eve, as on Hallowe’en, Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve. The harm was hard to mend, for no neighbour would give a light next morning for fear of giving away his luck. Fire stolen from a neighbour’s hearth was no better, since it was not counted holy.

New Year's Eve is one of the nights on which it is deemed highly unlucky in the Borders to let the fire out, the others being All Hallowe'en, Beltane or Midsummer Eve, and Christmas Eve.
