The young people of Fordyce drew valentines in February and read their future married lives from them. At Hallowe’en they pulled cabbages blindfold to learn the shape and size of their husbands, and threw nuts into the fire as the English did. Pennant’s third edition recorded these among the superstitions still lurking in that cultivated country.
