The Saturday before Shrove Tuesday was the egg feast, and apprentices once kept it as a great holiday. Taylor noted that the Oxford almanacks marked it as Fest Overum. He feared that scorn for old customs meant it and the other Shrovetide customs would soon be forgotten.
